And so it turns again to legendary punk and post punk songwriter, and original Stranglers member Hugh Cornwell, to show the younger gang how to do it. Bringing his back catalogue out mid 70 year old Cornwell takes us through an all-in, front-to-back, performance of his mythical album “Nosferatu”. Playing as part of his regular trio line up, Cornwell thrives as he, and the band, push themselves into replicating a technically difficult to play album for the live environment. Intense, focused, and full of spirit what Cornwell shows tonight is that not only is the album a hidden gem, but he remains one of punk/post-punks high watershed artists; producing interesting conceptual art and also challenging himself to improve and drive up his standards. If punk was about resetting, and post punk was about craftsmanship, then tonight shows that Cornwell had (and remains with) both – new ideas, a desire to rip up the old, and a desire to not only critique the past but to be hands on and build something better in its place.
