Opened in 2012, the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the Project Space, BALTIC 39, has been home to 32 studios supporting practitioners within the contemporary art and creative industries to grow, develop and sustain their practices.

Becoming almost essential to the local art community, and funded by a number of sources, this publicly accessible, cultural hub for contemporary art practice and research has been purposefully designed to maintain a mixed balance of studio holders at various stages of their practice and incorporate a mixture of art forms, media, and creative practices.

Supporting the growth, development, and discussion of art in the North East, Baltic 39 has also gained a reputation for hosting thought provoking, engaging, creative events both for emerging and acclaimed artists.

National touring exhibition ‘New Contemporaries’ will no doubt further extend BALTIC 39’s reputation for showcasing the best in emerging UK based artists when it brings it shares the exhibition of the high-profile platform with the Baltic later this month. Selected by artists Caroline Achaintre, Elizabeth Price and George Shaw the Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2017 category offers a showcase of work by the finest contemporary artists in the UK today including Calum Bowden, Eleanor Breeze, Christy Burdock and Robbie Campbell

With past alumni including significant post-war figures such as Frank Auerbach and Paula Rego; pop artists including Patrick Caulfield and David Hockney; decade-defining Damien Hirst and Gillian Wearing, New Contemporaries has gained a reputation for unearthing today’s finest artists and showcasing their work at an early stage of their development.

Bringing together an amazing creative space, with the best of emerging talent, this is an exhibition that shouldn’t be missed.
