In the lead up to her sophomore EP Golden, rising Scottish songstress NATI. offers fans a final glimpse into her artistic evolution with ‘This Town’. The track embodies her journey from survival to revival, masterfully weaving warm synths and bright keys with intricate guitar layers and dynamic percussion. Nati is playing The Cluny on 30th April,
Congratulations on This Town. Can you tell us a little bit about it.
The work came from a collaborative writing session with songwriting duo INK and it’s really a look at how a place influences you. In a way This Town challenges the usual ideas people might have about new beginnings and the idea that no matter where you go there you are.
The production is really interesting, can you tell us about that.
The production is supported by Kieran Smith and Ben Buist and they layer multiple guitar parts with synths and electrics. There was something about that sound that helped me to really bring out my vocals and be really authentic in the way I sang.
And the rest of the EP has similar themes and production, what else can you tell us about the EP?
I think the EP is all about survival and revival; moving away from acoustic folk and taking those ideas into new places and spaces. I liked the new electric sound and that helped me to really focus on Scotland and the spirit and history of the country.
There’s some interesting 80’s pop references in places also – I heard bits of a Michael Jackson style in places
Yes, I wanted , to have electric guitars and pop-inflected textures and I’m glad you said Michael because he was in my mind a lot.
You’ll be playing Newcastle in April, are you excited?
I am yes, Newcastle’s not too far away from me and I can wait to get out and play the EP to new people.
