Back with a great new single “The Death of Rock and Roll”, local act “The Flow State” are worth a note in the “ones to watch out for” sections. Damian Robinson caught up with the band to find out more about the single and future live plans.
Congratulations on The Death of Rock and Roll, it’s a great single can you tell us a little about how the song was written?
Chris, our guitarist originally brought the idea to the band which we all developed our own parts for. It’s about the opportunity Rock music creates for everyone and appreciating that regardless of your talent, each and every one of us is entitled to enjoy and embrace the freedom of playing music and all the success, failure, blood, sweat, anxiety and tears that come riding along with it.
“Death” has quiet a strong narrative about the state of the current music scene; is this the bands personal view or is it more of an abstract statement?
It’s more of an abstract statement than anything particular to do with the current music scene! We decided to record it because whenever we played it live, the crowd really enjoyed it and would clap along to the beat!
The Death has a really great sound and production, you worked with Jordan Miller on this – what did Jordan bring to the song and how was the song produced and mixed?
We went with Jordan because he’d done a brilliant job mixing live sound for us previously and we knew he had a home studio, which led to us asking him to produce it with us. We really wanted to cut the track down so it would work more with radio but felt we needed an objective view to get the best result.
In terms of live shows, you’ve just played the Ship Isis, how did the show go and how did The Death of Rock and Roll feel being played live?
The Ship Isis is a lovely venue which we definitely should have played sooner, the vibe of the upstairs room is really suave and sophisticated which suited our tracks like ‘Party Like We Used To’. ‘Death of Rock and Roll’ was a hit live as we hoped, the new structure for it has made it so much more enjoyable to play as well.
You’re a band that continues to put out new music and tour regularly – In terms of the rest of the 2025, what’s next, what do you hope to achieve, and where can we catch you?
We’re more sporadic with our live performances but we’re hoping to do a couple more gigs this year around the Sunderland – Newcastle area with our goals set firmly on playing venues we haven’t gotten to yet! We’ll definitely be looking at recording another one of our tracks as well.
We currently don’t have any gigs to announce but you can find us on most social media platforms as The Flow State!
The Death of Rock and Roll is out now.
