Flexing in an aura of a sunlounge draped, cocktail drinking, Vicodin-popping, lead character; the new one from Villagers has the feeling of a soundtrack to the next Bret Easton Ellis book about teenage dreams and promiscuous drug use. Intentionally distant, and using spaced out minimalism as a main ingredient, That Golden Dream mixes the calling-from-the-other-room vocals of Spiritualized with the light, almost 1970’s, pop of Josh Rouse’s 1972 album. Layered in gentle orchestras (the outstanding ‘First Responder’ which feels like a lost track from Ladies and Gentlemen) with the gentle acoustic guitar driven country-pop (“I want what I don’t need”, “You lucky one”) Villagers have created a lovely album which floats above life’s problems in an intentional pop haze. Excellent.
