For the past 20(ish) years, there’s been an interesting sub-genre in British music combining electronic beats and loud guitars, whilst gelling together punk/ska spirit, hip-hop influences and spoken word. Big Special join us at the second, or even third, wave of this sound, with Postindustrial being a loud and angry album that flitters across indie/punk/grime/soul/hip-hop genres with a nice kaleidoscope effect. If we’re harsh we’d say it defines the sound of their predecessors, but doesn’t offer much originality. If we’re kind we’d say it’s a definite attempt to meld modern music and modern angst into the type of wall-of-sound needed to soundtrack societal confusion and upset. The reality is that it’s somewhere in the middle; edgy, angry, loud, soulful but occasionally lacking an original sound.
