Cat Ryan. 27.6.23

Taking to the airwaves, the new Cat Ryan single ‘Like This’ is yet another great single from the promising outfit.  Released ahead of a busy summer season of touring, including an appearance at Last Train Home, Cat Ryan appear to be on some serious momentum.  Damian Robinson caught up with frontwoman Mary-Anne to find out more.

This is a great single Mary-Anne, congratulations.  Could you explain its genesis please?

I wrote the song quiet a few years ago, probably around 2017, and it’s all about pain and heartbreak.  There was a girl I liked, but I wasn’t out back then, so I never knew if she knew that liked her or not.  At the time I wrote some banjo parts down before I went to bed, then woke up and recorded the parts on guitar and added some lyrics.  Years later we’ve gone back to the song and worked on pulling it together.

Great, how has it been to revisit the song a few years later?

Really good, I can feel that my songwriting has changed but there’s extra layers added to the song now compared to back in 2017 and the whole song sounds really right now.

Are there plans to follow it up quiet quickly?

We’re working on an EP now, and I can hear how my songwriting has changed and where I experiment a bit more.  We think it’s going to be a 5 song EP and it’s sounding really good – Like this will be on the EP, as well as some songs that sound like us and maybe a song that’s really experimental and different for us, so it’s really exciting and we’re planning release dates and things now.

Will this be before the Last Train Home date in September?

I’m not entirely sure, but it’ll be around that time – hopefully.  We’ve got pieces to finish and we’re into a number of festival dates and live shows, so we’ll have to manage the EP around the live dates.

There’s quiet a number of live shows for you this summer, are you excited to get out and play?

Absolutely, most of the songs we’ll play live should make it to the EP, so it’ll be good to get out and play them live.  And we can’t wait for Last Train Home.

Do you think you’ll have time to check out some of the artists on the line-up, it looks really good.

We should do yes, sometimes we’re in-and-out with live dates, but there’s some bands we really want to see so with a bit of luck we can make a day of it and enjoy playing and also watching.

Like this is released now.  Cat Ryan play another of dates, including Last train home on September 2nd.
