The K’s. 24.2.25

Preparing for the release of their upcoming seconds album, ‘Pretty on the internet’, the K’s are about to embark on their largest tour to date.  Taking in Newcastle’s City Hall in the process.  Damian Robinson talks to K guitarist Ryan Breslin, about the tour, their new album, and recent single “Gravestone”

Hi Ryan, the two singles from the album ‘Gravestone’ and ‘Breakdown in my bedroom’ are both a lot more electronic than perhaps work from your debut album.  Are these good indications of the sound of the new album?

Thanks, great question.  They probably do have the sound yeah.  We’ve not done anything revolutionary with our sound, but when it came to making the record we really wanted it to feel uplifting and confident, so there’s more keyboards for sure.  The two new singles are a good idea of what people should expect.

Did the evolved sound come out of the songwriting process or later?

Probably later, we wrote the songs in pretty much the usual way but when we got into the studio and worked with Jim for the first time (Grammy Award winner Jim Lowe) he brought out different elements and parts to the songs.   |As much as anything there’s lots of analogue sound in the album and that comes from being in a new studio, with new toys, which helped finesse the sound.

You’re always a pretty band so what the recording quiet compact?

Yeah, we had the songs done by last summer which was the height of festival season, so we then had a quick turnaround in January to get things recorded.  We are probably better when we’re busy so if we weren’t touring then we were in our practice area or recording space.  That works well for us.

With the upcoming tour, and more complex production, how will you replicate the sound live?

Yeah we keep thinking about the shows and production so it’s always on our mind.  So we’ll have a lot more production, and lighting on the show, as well as making sure we have two session musicians on the stage – so there’ll be a lot more coming off the stage in terms of volume and effects. Everything has stepped up with this tour, production wise, and we’re building up our craft a lot more, which is all really great.

The ‘Pretty On The Internet’Tour wraps up in Newcastle on 22nd May.  Does the last night of a tour mean anything different or is every show a cup final?

It’s great to play Newcastle as the last show for sure, James is a Newcastle fan, and his dads from there, so it’s always a good crowd.  It’ll certainly be one big party and with this being our biggest tour it’s great to end in Newcastle.

Pretty on the internet is out 27th June.  The K’s play O2 City Hall, Newcastle 22nd May
