Returning with new music, Newcastle’s Roses in December continue to make really interesting, and really loud, alternative rock with more than a hint of revolutionary politics. Possibly their hardest sound to date, Roses new EP looks to take things even further. Damian Robinson caught up with principal songwriter, Max Houghton to find out more.
Congratulations on the new EP, it’s great. Can you tell us a little about how to was made.
Thanks, I think this is our rawest work to date for sure and we’re really happy with the way it’s come together. The EP was filled with raw ideas and this is us moving towards a slightly different type of sound so everything feels good at the minute.
Battleship Boomer has already become a favourite
Yeah that came out last year and that’s gone well really well which I think helps you feel confident when you’re putting out new work. That was recorded in May 2024, in fact most of the EP was recorded around that time, and it sounds quiet raw in how we put it together. There’s a new single out shortly, Inferno, and that was recorded around about the same time.
Could you tell us more about the Eps sound and new direction?
I suppose we chose the songs for the EP because we were looking for a consistency with our sound. The EP came together quiet naturally and we’ve been practicing live with raw ideas and demos so the songs fit together really well.
With these ideas being a year old is there new music in the pipeline to follow this?
There is yes, we’re building up to an album at the minute. We’ve got a lot of really good ideas so we’ll see where we can get to but we’re already onto the next steps.
And you’ve got the EP launch at Three Tanners Bank in North Shields on the 8th November?
Yeah, we’re really looking forward to it. That will be our only show of the year so we’re really excited and we’ll have some great support to play with us. It’ll be a special gig and hopefully a good crowd. We can’t wait to play.
And then its into 2025 and a potential album?
Yeah, we hope so. We want to play the launch EP show and then really plan out 2025 with more music and more live shows, so if anything this EP and the show feel like the start of, hopefully, a good run from us in terms of music and shows. We feel like we’re just getting started.
