Presumably influenced by the slower, more melancholic, elements of the 1975, the new track by Middlesbrough’s Bennett Eliott is an exploration into all things Matty Healy esque in terms of styling and production. Played with vocal toning, smooth vocals, acoustic led instrumentation and slightly distant/slightly yelling backing vocals, Mr Hyde sees Eliott explore complexities of modern life and modern relationships. Aligning himself to Healy’s method of building a story around social and cultural norms, Eliott shines in his way of developing the central character quickly and with enough narrative twists and turns to maintain interest. A solid production style ensures the song sounds impressive and is kept tight – neatly wrapping up an impressive single into two minutes forty seconds. It may not be the most original, but Mr Hyde is a strong demonstration of an artist building his songwriting and production confidence and technical skills.
