DMA’s. NX. 7.2.26

It’s the Salarymen who open tonight’s sold out DMA’s show at the Nx; blazing in with psych-filled-pop-rock in the spirit of aussie country mates Tame Impala.  The duo, spaced out in a live setting as a four-piece for their live show (two guitars, bass and drums) plough through dreamy blissed out stoner rock in a combination that ends somewhere between Best Coast and The Lemon Twigs.  Particular credit tonight goes to lead/travelling guitarist Mick Speildman(!?) and to final song “Holding On” both of which combine to showcase the Salary’s significant potential.
A quick changeover sees the venue reach capacity before the (D-d-) Dma’s step on stage to considerable cheers at just after 9.  Playing “Hills end” front to back (can you really believe it’s ten years old!?) the opening 3-punch combination of “Timeless”, “Lay Down” and “Delete” is faultless; the six-piece outfit delivering on the intricate textures and the crowd providing mass sing along moments.  In terms of any unconverted crowd members, it’s over from the end of “Delete”, and there’s a home stretch for the band across the rest of the show (finishing off the album and providing a six song encore).  Another day I’d like to get into aligning the DMA’s with INXS (shy but stylish lead singers, boundless energy from  charismatic guitarists, quiet but groovy bass players) but let’s not go there today – let’s leave it at the fact that, like the INXS gang, these Aussie lads know who they are and what their audience wants. And they deliver it like it’s a cup final.
