It’s an earlyish start from The Wedding Present tonight as they march on at 8.30 looking sharp and ready to go. Now grey, band leader David Gedge looks more match-fit than he has done in years; both trim and elastic whilst, from a distance, morphing more into Adam Clayton’s long lost brother. Spread over their set, the four-piece Presents are on sparkling form tonight – Gedge and rhythm guitarist Rachael Wood having outstanding chemistry together as they play with a physical intensity reminiscent of Strummer/Jones bashing and pounding their instruments with intensity whilst refusing to stand still – they’re a joy to watch. Collectively the output borders on a Northern Soul mash us with streams of British Indie and sways of alternative American rock – providing a consistent musical groove, with intense lyrics and layers and layers of guitar effects, pedals and feedback. Matching the musical grooves with the intense playing, standouts like Click Click and Dalliance sparkle tonight; burning with a jingly jangly pop sound and a connection that’s hard to fake. Some bands might dial it in but Gedge and the Gang never seem to. He means it man.
