Sitting somewhere between the most tender, loved-up, moments of The Style Council, and the darker, more self-loathing, ingredients of Radiohead (specifically “Creep”), the new one from Frazer Lambert arrives fully formed and filled with ambition and poise. Led by an acoustic guitar, the beauty in Renaissance is its ability to straddled gentle warm melodies with gentle, deft, flickers of lush orchestra. Building nicely across it’s near 5 minutes, Lambert cleverly pushes and pulls the narratives and volume of his vocals as the tale moves from love to loss to regret to hope, a touch that mixes well with changes in musical texture. Ambitious, well produced and aiming high, this is a great statement all round.
