Creating an interesting dynamic, Broken Mirror brings together composer and arranger Matthew E White with visual artist, poet and musician Lonnie Holley. Drawing influence from the deep funk grooves of Thundercat and Parliament/Funkadelic, and aligning them with electronic synth and techno beats, White’s sonic background provides interesting spaces for Holley to fill with deeply contemplative, mind bending, topics (quantum physics, the upload time of terabytes of data, the damage of social media). Reminiscent perhaps of the work between Gil Scott-Heron and Richard Russell on Heron’s ‘I’m new here’, the triumph of Broken Mirror is the way that both artists seem to nudge each other into new and interesting spaces. One for the contemplative electro boogie fans.
