Local five piece outfit Voluntears open tonight’s show in front of, what appears to be at least, some local die-hard fans who sing and dance along. Standouts “Feels like home” and “Mary” showcase some solid indie-rock tunes filled with a heavy influence of Who-style blues rock. Their set is packed with moments of great songwriting and is delivered with an intense, and lively, performance style. A quick turnaround sees Liverpool’s The Real People take to stage next; currently in a five member line up including original brotherly songwriting duo Tony and Chris Griffiths. Filled with some high-in-the-mix bass grooves and psychedelic guitar licks, the Real’s combine to produce a deeply musical performance – jangling through an early 90s indie/baggy crossover feel with serious musical and harmony skills. Supporting the musical set-up, the Griffith brothers combine well vocally, developing a sound that is polished and proves that neither age nor time has affected their songwriting or live playing capabilities. It may not be a packed house, and they may not be the best remembered indie act of the early 90s, but by god they’re good.
